QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Insurgents attacked a Pakistani security post near the country’s border with Iran on Thursday, sparking a shootout that killed two soldiers, the military said.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in the Singwan area of the troubled southwestern province of Baluchistan. The two soldiers who died “accepted martyrdom while bravely fighting once morest the terrorists,” the army said.
The army launched a search operation and the Iranian authorities were alerted to monitor the attackers who tried to flee, the note added.
Last month, five Iranian border guards were killed in a clash with an unknown armed group near the Pakistani border. The insurgents often attack the border guards of both nations in the region.
Small separatist groups in Baluchistan, an oil-rich province, have waged a low-profile insurgency for more than two decades. Initially, the Baloch nationalists wanted a higher share of the regional resources, but later began a struggle for independence from the Islamabad government.
