Fifteen members of the same family have died in Namibia following eating a porridge suspected of being the cause of food poisoning, we learned from the police on Wednesday.

On Saturday evening, in the village of Kayohala located in the far north-east of the country, the family of 21 members, including young children, gathered as usual at dinner time. On the menu: porridge, staple food for the meals of many modest families.

Soon following, everyone starts to feel bad. “All 21 family members who ate the food fell ill and their condition progressed very rapidly from serious to critical. They were rushed to hospital,” police said in a statement.

Investigators suspect a case of food poisoning due to the ingestion of cereals used for the manufacture of alcohol.

In Namibia, craft beer is made with a mixture of grain, water and sugar. Everything is then fermented.

According to an elected representative of the constituency quoted in the local press, Laurentius Mukoya, some driven by hunger reduce the remains of cereals used for the manufacture of beer to flour and consume it.

Food samples taken during autopsies are being analyzed, police said.
