On Wednesday, Moscow condemned Germany’s decision to close four of the five Russian consulates on its soil, considering it a “provocative and reckless” step, and vowed to respond.

“There should be no doubt in Berlin that these reckless provocations will not remain without an adequate response on our part,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

This retaliatory step comes following Moscow placed restrictions on the maximum number of employees of the German embassy and related bodies who can stay in Russia, according to the official website of the German Deutsche Welle network.

Germany’s foreign ministry said Berlin had revoked the licenses of four out of five Russian consulates in a retaliatory measure once morest Moscow.

A spokesman for the ministry justified the move to reporters, saying the measure aims to provide “parity in personnel and structures” between the two countries.

The spokesman said that Russia had “taken an escalating step” in reducing the German presence, and added: “This unjustified decision forces the German government to make a very significant reduction in all areas of its presence in Russia.”

It is noteworthy that following the end of this year, Russia will only be allowed to continue operating the embassy in Berlin and one other consulate.
