“Incidents of People Getting Stuck in Brussels Metro Station Shutters: Causes, Consequences, and Recurrence”

The scene is surreal, and might have had even more serious consequences: a person found himself this Wednesday around 4:30 a.m. stuck in the shutter of the Porte de Hal metro station, along the Little Belt of Brussels.

The shutter having been raised with the leg of the individual wedged in an opening, the person found himself suspended. This required the intervention of numerous firefighters, the police, the emergency services and the STIB. “The injured was transferred, under escort of the Smur, to the hospital”commented in the wake of the intervention the spokesperson for the Brussels firefighters.

But even more unusual than the scene of this Wednesday: the recurrence of this type of incident. Last week, a man also had to be rescued for the same reasons, not far from there, at the parvis de Saint-Gilles station.

And the spokesperson for the Brussels firefighters reminds us: a third case occurred at Porte de Namur, last March. “This type of accident had already happened in the past, but it remains very rare”, comments on its side the Stib.

dark circumstances

The circumstances of the incidents are murky to say the least. “It’s Magritte. I don’t understand. We hope it will stop”, we comment in the fire department. The person arrested at the Parvis was notably under the influence.

According to the Brussels public transport company, it was people trying to force the shutters, “by chance” at the time of the automatic opening of the doors, namely around 4-5 am. “It’s not smart. And it is in any case an attempt at intrusion and vandalism”asserts the spokesperson for the institution, who points to the damage caused to the infrastructure during the incident and the rescue.

These accidents, if they resulted in a transfer to the hospital, fortunately did not involve the vital prognosis of the victims. But according to the firefighters, without the rapid interventions carried out, the consequences might have been much more serious, even amputation.
