“A lot has happened” – is Yann Sommer staying at Bayern Munich following all?

It remains to be seen whether the national goalie will stay in Munich or make room for Manuel Neuer.

During the celebrations, however, it seemed clear who was in charge of the house.
Nati goalie Yann Sommer from FC Bayern has left his future in Munich open, but has not ruled out another season in the FCB shirt. “I still have two years of contract and have not been here that long. But I’m not worried at the moment, »said the 34-year-old Swiss on the sidelines of the Munich championship celebrations on Sunday. The assumption is obvious: The keeper probably has little perspective on playing time when Manuel Neuer is back in the Munich goal.
Recently, media reports had increased that Sommer wanted to leave the German record champions following this season – mainly so as not to jeopardize his place in the goal of the Swiss national team due to a lack of match practice. “Yes, yes,” said Sommer on Sunday when asked whether he needed a permanent place in a club team for a place in the national team. “But still very relaxed. We will see.”

Fringe figure at the celebrations?
Although Sommer has played a whopping 19 Bundesliga games since arriving in Munich and also made brilliant saves more than once in the championship final in Cologne, it seemed as if he was at the celebrations following the spectacular and especially late win the championship by the actual regular goalie and captain have already been supplanted.
After all, it was the 37-year-old Neuer who lifted the notorious championship trophy – and was usually to be found in the epicenter of the party hustle and bustle. Summer, on the other hand, was mostly only seen on the fringes of the action. When asked if that would have bothered him, Sommer told SRF: “Not at all.” After all, Neuer is a captain. A collegial relationship is also maintained in day-to-day dealings.
“Bayern change was worth it”
In general, the 82-time Swiss international found that the transfer to Munich would have been worthwhile: “A lot has happened so far: we had a goalie coach change, a coach change and a change in the management floor. There was a lot of criticism.” But this has a wonderful end with the championship title, we celebrated properly. After all, there’s nothing better than winning the last game. Sommer: “It’s a big moment for me, a big title that makes me extremely proud.”
During the winter break, Sommer came from Borussia Mönchengladbach for eight million francs to replace the injured Neuer. His contract is dated until June 30, 2025. As of now, Sommer, Neuer and Alexander Nübel, who is loaned to AS Monaco, would meet in Munich in the new season. In addition, Bayern still have Sven Ulreich and Johannes Schenk as keeper. Neuer broke his leg in a skiing accident while on vacation following the World Cup in December.
Lower defense rate than at Gladbach
From a purely statistical point of view, Sommer’s appearances in the Bayern jersey leave a somewhat mixed impression. The national goalie was only able to fend off 55 percent of all shots on his goal – only Schalke goalie Alexander Schwolow (51 percent) has an even worse value. For comparison: In the first half of the season, Sommer still had a defense rate of 77 percent for Gladbach.
With 25 goals conceded, the Swiss is only slightly above the value of the expected goals of 24.4. Overall, with 1.6 saves per game in the Bayern box, Sommer had significantly less to do than with Gladbach (4.7). With a pass rate of 85.3 percent, the 34-year-old is at the top of all Bundesliga goalkeepers. In addition, Sommer is only the third foreign goalkeeper to win the championship title with Bayern, following Belgian Jean-Marie Pfaff and Spaniard Pepe Reina.
With this goal, Musiala shot Bayern to the championship shortly before the end.
