The CD&V showed itself divided on Tuesday during the vote on the articles of the Flemish decree serving as the basis for the creation of new national parks. In the Environment Committee, MEP Stijn De Roo voted in favour, while Tinne Rombouts voted once morest. The entire decree will be voted on at second reading in committee on Wednesday following the plenary.

In the government agreement in which the Flemish Christian Democrats participate, with the N-VA and the Open Vld, it is planned to recognize three landscape parks and four national parks during this legislature. A trajectory has been traced with applications, juries and selection procedures.

Divisions

The decree which serves as the legal basis for these parks, currently under consideration in the Flemish Parliament, divides the ranks of the CD&V. One of the provisions stipulates that 75% of the area concerned must be converted into a nature reserve. According to the regional Minister of Agriculture Jo Brouns (CD&V), the future Taxandria park cannot see the light of day near Turnhout, because too much effort in terms of nitrogen management is required in the area.

For Tinne Rombouts, the decree does not guarantee that interest groups, owners and entrepreneurs will be involved in the creation of a park, she denounced on Tuesday. In his view, the guarantees are also insufficient for the municipalities. A second reading of the text is planned. “I suspect no adjustments will be made until then. In that case, I will also vote once morest on Wednesday,” Ms. Rombouts said.

In Wallonia, the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse and Semois Valley projects were selected last December and will be recognized as the first National Parks in the south of the country. Currently, Belgium has only one national park, that of “Hoge Kempen” (Upper Campine, Limburg).
