President Alberto Fernandez held a bilateral meeting with the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Madurowithin the framework of the Meeting of Presidents of the South American countries, which is taking place this Tuesday at the Itamaraty Palace in Brazil, with the aim of generating consensus and reinforcing the mechanisms of Latin American integration.

“I met with the president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, to continue advancing in the construction of a united Latin America that defends democratic processes, human rights and the freedom of peoples,” Fernández wrote on his Twitter account following the meeting.

At the meeting, both leaders stressed the importance of normalizing the bilateral relationship. In that sense, Argentina raised that a road map should be agreed with the ruling party and the opposition where they work on the guarantees for the electoral process of the year 2024.

Argentina reiterated the need to remove sanctions imposed by other countriesas it did on different occasions such as the IX Summit of the Americas in June 2022 in the United States, the VII Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Buenos Aires de January 2023 and the International Conference held in Colombia in April of this year.

In relation to this, within the framework of the Paris Peace Forum in November 2022, the presidents of France, Emmanuel Macron; from Argentina, Alberto Fernández, and from Colombia, Gustavo Petro, expressed their full support for the resumption of the negotiation process between Venezuelans in a special sequence on that country in which they met with the government’s representatives for dialogue, Jorge Rodríguez, and the opposition Unitary Platform, Gerardo Blyde, as well as the Norwegian Foreign Minister, Anniken Huitfeldt.

In addition, on April 25, 2023 it was held in Colombiaby convening the president of that country, an International Conference to promote dialogue between representatives of civil society, the opposition and the government of Venezuela, with the aim of reopening roads and building a road map to stimulate and support dialogue.
