Only the super rich can afford the exclusive boarding school “Institut auf dem Rosenberg” in Switzerland. But anyone who brags regarding their family’s wealth “is a loser,” says the head of the boarding school.
St. Gallen – The “Institut auf dem Rosenberg” is probably the most expensive boarding school in the world: “Parents can count on 150,000 francs (more than 154,000 euros) per school year,” explains boarding school director Bernhard Gademann in an interview with the business week. He is the fourth generation to lead the institute, which was founded in 1889, and points out that the payment system consists of basic fees and individual fees: if the child goes skiing, for example, that would be an additional course and the fees would vary accordingly.
Long waiting list at the Swiss elite boarding school “Institut auf dem Rosenberg”
But even if you can raise so much money for your child’s education, the boarding school place is not guaranteed: “There is a boarding school place for four registrations,” says Gademann the magazine. In grades 11 and 12, no one is actually accepted at this point in the year. Diversity is also important when it comes to admission, because: “We want a good mix in the classes.” Children from 55 nations are currently attending the boarding school.
For the money, the boarding school near St. Gallen not only offers a picturesque campus and 13 Art Nouveau villas with a view of Lake Constance. There is also a Science Center, a Creative Lab and a Health & Fitness Club, among others. The students can dine royally: the kitchen team has many years of work experience in Michelin-star restaurants, according to the website.
In line with their international background, the students at the “Institut auf dem Rosenberg” can achieve various international qualifications such as the British A-Levels, the German Abitur or the Advanced Placements, which are popular at the top universities in the USA. In addition, the boarding school offers 40 different seasonally varying sports courses and 60 co-curricular courses in areas such as robotics, fashion design or sustainable product design. This should also prepare the children for later (professional) life.
Robotics and sailing off Monaco for the kids of the super rich
High performance is expected at the boarding school, Gademann explains to the Süddeutsche Zeitung: “It is quite common for students to have 40 academic lessons per week and also work on the weekends. We demand a lot.” Travel and sport also have the goal of learning something: “When we sail off Monaco, it’s also regarding learning from a captain how to lead a crew of 25 people and what makes a good manager “, the head of the boarding school told the SZ.
In the classes with a maximum of eight students, who are divided according to interests and not according to year, each participant should be addressed individually: You see yourself as an “incubator for ideas and concepts”, says Gademann stern.de. “We believe that the majority of these can actually be implemented at any school.” You have to support the students in their interests – but that’s of course much easier with a lot of money and without a curriculum.
Expensive boarding school: dress code and regular drug tests
Gademann and his wife took over the school from his father just a few years ago and modernized the offerings and regulations. But the regular drug tests continue to exist, explains the head of the boarding school. “You can’t be naïve either, we carry out alcohol and alcohol tests.” But the dress code is now more relaxed – at least somewhat: Before, the girls had to wear skirts and the boys had to straighten the chairs for the girls at mealtimes. Now the girls are allowed to wear trousers. However, jeans for both sexes are still not allowed during classes and meals.
And at an elite boarding school like this, do you brag regarding branded clothes? No, says Gademann to the business week. “Anyone who brags regarding the wealth and achievements of their families is, I tell the students, a loser.” Expensive handbags or luxury watches are more important to the upper middle class anyway: “Our families are at a level where Status symbols don’t matter.”
