Somalis Express Immense Joy After Turkish President Erdogan’s Re-Election Victory

Somalis expressed their immense joy following Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s victory in the second round of the Turkish presidential election, obtaining 52.18% of the vote.

Somalia, which renewed its humanitarian relations with Türkiye following Erdogan’s historic 2011 visit to the country, and which helped end widespread famine, is today looking forward to strengthening the momentum of its relations with Türkiye. Somalia is at the head of the African countries which have benefited from the Turkish policy which has turned more towards the continent.

Over the past ten years, Turkish-Somali relations have resulted in the strengthening of partnership and cooperation in the political, military and economic fields, which has led Somalis to take an interest in Turkish presidential and parliamentary elections.

Anadolu asked Somalis regarding the Turkish elections and their aspirations for the future of their country’s relations with Türkiye under President Erdogan’s new term.

– Great interest in the Turkish elections

The second round of the Turkish presidential elections has drawn great attention from Somalis. Some followed the results in front of screens and in cafes in Mogadishu, while others preferred to stay at home to follow the electoral process.

Abdi Mohamed told Anadolu that he followed the first and second rounds of the Turkish presidential election, stressing the importance of this ballot given the growing relations between the two countries.

For his part, Abdel Fattah, a Somali crossed by Anadolu indicated that he had celebrated the victory of President Erdogan which is also a victory for all Somalis.

As for Hassan Ali, who followed the second round of the presidential election, said he had followed the ballot with his family, explaining that he was happy with the result.

The Turkish elections were at the center of the attention of Somalis, who followed with great enthusiasm the recent results which will influence the future of relations between the two countries.

– Erdogan’s victory

After the announcement of the preliminary results of the presidential election, and the victory of President Erdogan, politicians and leaders of the country rushed to congratulate him, especially on the web.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, as well as former Presidents Muhammad Abdullah Farmajo and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed congratulated the Turkish President on his reappointment to the highest office.

Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Berri also sent his congratulations to President Erdogan for his victory in the presidential election, wishing the strengthening of relations between the two countries.

Likewise, Speaker of the People’s Assembly Adam Muhammad Nur and Speaker of the Senate Abdi Hashi Abdullah congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election as head of Türkiye.

The head of the friendship committee of the parliaments of Somalia and Türkiye, MP Sadik Omar Hassan, also congratulated Erdogan on his re-election to the Turkish Presidency, noting that he “looks forward to the contribution of the parliaments of the two countries to the strengthening of the bilateral partnership.

Somalis also exchanged congratulations on social media for President Erdogan’s victory, believing that his victory will strengthen relations between the two peoples.

– The momentum of relations between the two countries

Taher Abdul Qadir, a student, said Erdogan’s victory in the presidential election is historic for Somalis, given his humanitarian positions at their side in times of crisis.

Taher stressed that President Erdogan’s victory “might help develop relations between the two countries, given that Türkiye is at the forefront of countries supporting Somalia”.

For his part, Muhammad Othman Sheikh, a Somali trader, said he hopes relations between the two countries will develop under the new presidential term of Erdogan, who had made great efforts to support the Somali people.

As for Salma Othman, she said that Türkiye has brought a lot to Somalis, believing that the re-election of President Erdogan will deepen relations between the two countries in the years to come.

In the second round of the presidential election, Erdogan won 52.18% of the vote, once morest 47.82% for opposition candidate Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, according to the Supreme Election Commission.
