Nintendo is very protective of its catalog of games. The proof once once more with this letter addressed to the developers of Dolphin, an emulator which allows in particular to run GameCube and Wii games.
The Dolphin project is nothing new, it was born in 2003. But recently, the teams behind this open source emulator announced their intention to offer a version on Steam, which would allow in particular to play Gamecube and Wii games on the Steam Deck, Valve’s portable PC console.
But it was without counting on Nintendo, which immediately put an end to this idea. “It is with great disappointment that we have to announce that the release of Dolphin on Steam has been indefinitely postponed.”, announced the developers of Dolphin. “Valve notified us that Nintendo has issued a cease and desist order citing the DMCA once morest Dolphin’s Steam page, and has removed Dolphin from Steam until the matter is resolved. We are currently reviewing our options and will have a more detailed response in the near future..”
Important detail, it was Valve who immediately contacted Nintendo, in order to avoid any problem between the two companies. Valve might very well have offered the software on its Steam store, emulation being legal when the player has an original copy of the game he is emulating.
