Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the blood. Having too much of it is a cause for concern because it can build up in your blood vessels, leading to blockages. This can increase your risk of serious health conditions such as strokes and heart disease.

According to the British newspaper express, diet is one of the factors contributing to cholesterol levels, and it is known that eating a lot of fatty foods raises cholesterol, along with not exercising enough and smoking.

However, in the same way that some foods and drinks can raise cholesterol, others can lower it.

One expert recommended drinking two cups of pomegranate juice each week as a simple way to lower cholesterol levels.

British nutritionist Harry Griffiths explained: “There are a lot of benefits to drinking pomegranate juice, such as the fact that it contains catechins, which have antioxidant properties, thus reducing the absorption of cholesterol through the intestines.”

Pomegranate juice has the ability to reduce damage to blood vessels by lowering levels of bad cholesterol present in the body and helping reduce plaque buildup in the arteries.

“You can see the benefits of the antioxidants in this drink by enjoying a cup of pomegranate twice a week,” he adds.

This is supported by a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food in 2021.

As part of the research, 24 patients were divided into two groups – one that consumed 300ml of pomegranate juice daily for two weeks and the other that did not.

The study said: “Pomegranate juice has potential positive effects in patients with metabolic disorders due to its high polyphenol content.”

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a two-week dietary intake of juice on blood pressure, lipid metabolism, and markers of oxidative stress in overweight patients with dyslipidemia. [اختلال في الدهون بما في ذلك الكوليسترول].

She added: “Twenty-four patients, eight males and 16 females, aged between 40-60 years, with overweight and dyslipidemia, were randomly assigned to the intervention group, who consumed 300 ml of juice daily for two weeks, or the control group.”

The study recorded how those who drank pomegranate juice had lower blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein — or “bad” cholesterol.

After two weeks of consuming the juice, the intervention group had significantly lower diastolic blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, aminotransferase and glutathione peroxidase activity.

The study concluded: “These results show that even short-term consumption of dietary doses of juice has beneficial effects and influences lipid metabolism in overweight patients with dyslipidemia.”

High cholesterol often does not cause symptoms, so the only way to be sure of your cholesterol levels is to have them checked by your doctor.

A healthy level of total cholesterol in blood is five millimoles or less per liter (mmol/L).

More specifically, a healthy level of HDL is one or more mmol/L and you should have four or less mmol/L of LDL.

Ways to lower cholesterol include:

Do more exercise

Eat less fatty foods

Quit Smoking
