Taxpayers who declared the 2023 Income Tax are receiving a notice in their email addresses alleging an alleged failure to send the document. The message sent on behalf of the Federal Revenue tries to induce the recipient to inform his personal data (RG, CPF, address, etc.) to scammers through a malicious link.
This scam is known as phishing (“fishing” in Portuguese) and uses elements of social engineering to steal sensitive information. In the case of the recent fraud related to the IRPF, the email sent by the criminals brings the following misleading message (there are some variations of this script):
“We have identified an error in your income tax return. It is necessary to correct it as soon as possible. Please correct the items mentioned in the pdf”, with an attached document. The text tries to create a sense of urgency in the victim by stipulating a deadline for rectification to be made.
As the Revenue explains, if the taxpayer has fallen into the Fiscal Mesh — popularly known as “Fine Mesh” — it is possible to check through the e-CAC portal (access) going to the “My Income Tax” option. Thus, citizens can check their status with the federal agency officially and completely free of charge.
If the declaration has fallen into the loop, it is possible to correct the errors and send it back to the RFB. According to experts, it is important to be wary of emails that try to collect personal data, and you should always opt for the official channels of the Revenue Service or banks in case of doubts regarding the status of both the tax return and the account.
read below one of the versions of the coup:
We identified an error on your income tax return. It is necessary to carry out the correction as soon as possible. Please correct the items mentioned in the pdf:
The correction must be sent by 05/31/2023.
We thank you for your attention and collaboration. “
