New features, including screen sharing and search by username, are coming to betas of WhatsApp.

New on WhatsApp. In order to facilitate its use, the messaging application is developing a number of new features, including search by username and screen sharing, reported on May 28, WABetaInfo.

Spotted in the Android beta version of the app, the search by username feature allows WhatsApp users to choose a unique username linked to their account.

This functionality means that in the future users will be able to find each other via their surname instead of using a telephone number as is currently the case. According to WABetaInfo, conversations started using a nickname are end-to-end encrypted.

“Archiving of statutes” reserved for companies

Some Android app beta testers also noticed a new feature: screen sharing. After pressing the button that activates this option, users can start sharing their screen content during video calls.

The feature also saves the segment of the shared call. Among the other features offered to some beta testers is a “status archive” setting. The latter offers companies the possibility of archiving the statuses following 24 hours and then sharing them later once more if they wish. WABetaInfo notes that the status archiving function seems to be limited to companies for the moment.
