Eighteen people were injured following a fire broke out in a seven-storey government building in Cairo on Monday, an Egyptian security source said.
The source said that the fire broke out in the building of the May 15th City Authority, south of the capital, and that the injuries ranged from suffocation to superficial burns.
A statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Interior indicated that “the initial examination showed that an electrical short circuit in an air conditioner on the third floor was behind the fire.”
The fire spread to more than one floor, while a large part of the facade of the building was damaged as a result of the fire.
The building was evacuated from employees and visitors, while smoke rose from inside.
The source added that the authorities sent 10 fire engines to the site of the accident, and later the Civil Protection Department in Cairo announced that the fire had been brought under control.
