The President of the Spanish Government and General Secretary of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), Pedro Sanchez, announced on Monday the holding of early general elections on 23rd July next.
In an institutional statement, the day following the regional and municipal elections, won by the Popular Party (PP), Sanchez indicated that the Spaniards must decide on their political future as soon as possible.
“I have just had a meeting with His Majesty the King, during which I informed the Head of State of the decision to convene a Council of Ministers this followingnoon to dissolve the two chambers of Parliament and convene general elections,” Sanchez added.
“I took this decision, in view of the results of Sunday’s elections”, he said, noting that “it is necessary to give an answer to the citizens”.
According to him, the best thing to do is for the Spaniards to make a decision, noting that the objective is to “submit the democratic mandate of the government to the will of the people”.
