Second consecutive night of massive air raids on Kiev

For the second night in a row, massive Russian airstrikes have rocked the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. According to official information, Ukrainian air defense shot down more than 40 Russian missiles over Kiev. The Kiev military administration announced on Monday night on the Telegram news channel that it was a combination of rocket and drone attacks. According to preliminary information, no one was injured in the night’s attacks.

According to its own statements, the Ukrainian military shot down 29 of the 35 drones launched by the Russian armed forces on Monday night. In addition, 37 of 40 missiles were intercepted, the Air Force announced on the short message service Telegram. The Russian armed forces targeted military facilities and critical infrastructure.

This is the 15th Russian air raid on the city this month and the second consecutive night raid. As early as Sunday night, Kiev was hit by the heaviest drone attack to date. Although according to the authorities 52 of the unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down, there were at least two deaths from falling parts. On the last Sunday in May, the city traditionally celebrates the day of its official founding 1,541 years ago.

According to Ukrainian sources, the port of Odessa was partially damaged during a Russian drone attack on Monday night. “The impact caused a fire in the port infrastructure of Odessa,” the Ukrainian military’s Southern Command said on Facebook. The fire was quickly extinguished. The military left open whether the damage to the port would also endanger grain exports.

Ukraine can only export grain and other foodstuffs through the ports in the Odessa region. In July 2022, the United Nations and Turkey negotiated a grain agreement with Ukraine and Russia that was initially valid for 120 days. It was extended once more this month. The deal aims to ensure the safe export of grain and food from three Ukrainian ports – Odessa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyy – even during the war, thereby helping to deal with the global food crisis. Ukraine is one of the largest grain exporters in the world.
