It was an emotional game for him.
What wasn’t going on this football weekend? On Saturday, FC Bayern Munich won the championship following a dramatic season finale in a long-distance duel with Borussia Dortmund, on Sunday the HSV fans stormed the pitch and celebrated direct promotion to the 1st Bundesliga too early. And then there was national team captain Granit Xhaka, who helped Arsenal beat Wolverhampton 5-0 in the last game of the season.
It was probably the last game of the Schweizers for the Londoners. Rumors regarding a transfer of the 30-year-old to Bayer Leverkusen have persisted for weeks. Several TV stations and transfer experts also confirmed before the game that the move to the Bundesliga would be communicated in the next few days.
And the national captain himself announced last week that he would soon be providing information regarding his future. Before the game itself, Xhaka wrote on Insta: «thank you gunners” and listed the titles he has won in the red dress – two FA Cups, two Community Shields.
Fans bow to the Swiss
The national team captain played fantastically once morest the Wolves. The Swiss scored two goals within four minutes and was the linchpin of the Gunners’ game. He was always free for his team-mates and with a bit of luck he might have scored even more goals. For the 30-year-old it was the only brace at professional level. Only in the FCB U-21s did he succeed in 2010 once morest the FC Winterthur U-21s. So it was a Xhaka party that Sunday followingnoon!
Even following his goals, all the teammates celebrated with the 30-year-old and the fans in the sold-out Emirates Stadium kept chanting loud fan chants regarding the Arsenal star. When he was substituted in the 75th minute, all the fans in the stadium stood up.
The supporters sang: “Granit Xhaka, we want you to stay” (German: “We want you to stay.”) After the final whistle, Xhaka was emotional with his wife Leonita and their daughter. Hours following the game, the national captain spoke up on Insta.
The 30-year-old reposted several posts where he was tagged. Among other things, that of his brother Taulant, who paid homage to his brother on Insta. Xhaka also shared a post from “433” in his story. Under this, those responsible wrote: “Farewell in style”. The Swiss himself reposted it without comment. Then he published a photo of himself and addressed the Arsenal fans: “Nothing but love for you all”, his words (German: “Nothing but love for you all.”)
Granit Xhaka came from Gladbach
Coach Mikel Arteta said following the game regarding the “Man of the Match”: “He’s an incredible player and today he showed once more what a great influence he has on the team.” And: “I told him a year ago that he had to improve. Xhaka reacted, came back from vacation four kilograms lighter and was determined.” Then he began to sing his praises: “He was extraordinary, he made a significant contribution to the success of the team and I’m so happy that everyone appreciates his performance.”
He is to sign a four-year contract with Leverkusen. The Bundesliga club should have to transfer a transfer fee in the region of 15 million francs to London. There, the 113-time national player still has a working paper that is valid until the summer of 2024. Xhaka joined Arsenal from Gladbach in the summer of 2016 for CHF 45 million. In seven years in England, the 30-year-old made 295 appearances for the Gunners.
