Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation Alexander Bastrykin instructed to open a criminal case in response to a video where US Senator Lindsey Graham talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. How the investigators qualify the dialogue is not disclosed.

A message regarding Bastrykin’s reaction was published on the department’s telegram channel on May 28. It is specified that the reason for initiating a criminal case was “the statements of the American senator regarding the murder of Russians.” According to what article it is planned to investigate the crime, the Investigative Committee does not report.

The video materials of the meeting with Graham were published by the press service of the President of Ukraine on May 26, and two days later the fragment appeared in the Russian-language segment of Telegram. And – already with English subtitles, where it is stated that the senator says the phrase “Russians are dying”, and then following gluing it sounds: “We have never spent money so well.”

part of the conversation was published on the morning of May 28 in the tg-channel “Pool No. 3”, which is hosted by the special correspondent of “Komsomolskaya Pravda” Dmitry Smironov. In the upper right corner of the video is the logo of the British tabloid The Sun, and the design of the credits is similar to the original. Shortly before Bastrykin, the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, responded to the remark in the link “Russians are dying” – “we have never spent money so successfully”.

“It’s hard to imagine a greater shame for the country than having such senators,” he told the Shot telegram channel.

The English-speaking correspondents of Fontanka, following repeatedly listening to the conversation in the original video (without the help of captions), did not hear the word dying (“dying”). Blogger Rustam Adagamov also drew attention to the subtitle error. But he hears the phrase “Russians are down” (“Russians are losing”).

The recording is very quiet, and the senator doesn’t speak clearly. Fontanka reporters agree that Lindsey Graham still says “and the Russians regards” (“and the Russians will have to reckon with this”), nodding to Zelensky’s words that Ukrainians will be free.

Due to the fact that the video published in the Zelensky channel has signs of editing, it is difficult to determine what the phrase regarding well spent money referred to. Neither the White House, nor the US Congress, nor the senator himself has commented on Lindsey Graham’s words and their interpretation.
