Ham shells, ketchup shells, vegetable shells, shell gratin… Small pasta is parents’ best allies for children’s meals. Easy to eat even for the youngest, they are delicious and generally unanimous. But sometimes, when you leave the table, you notice that your children are still hungry. And that’s normal, according to a nutritionist.
The disadvantage of shells
In an interview given to Parisian, Stéphanie Michel, head of dietary consultations at the Thalasso & Spa Barrière in La Baule, explains why this choice is not really optimal. If the shells do not bring the same feeling of satiety as other pasta, it is because of their small size.
“This absence of chewing also induces digestive discomfort and bloating in the stomach, insofar as their starch is not predigested by the enzymes present in the saliva”, she specifies. The fact that the shells are associated with butter, ketchup or cheese does not help digestion. Better to accompany them with a source of protein, or vegetables that will provide fiber. The latter are quite easy to hide in a tomato sauce, for example.
Which pasta do you prefer?
To avoid the feeling of hunger following eating pasta, it is better to opt for other models, such as farfalles, macaroni, fusilli or even rigatoni, which require more chewing, and are therefore more nutritious and more digestible to eat. that time.
In addition, do not hesitate to opt for whole pasta, which has a higher fiber content, while being more digestible and less caloric. Finally, favor Italian al dente cooking, which reduces the impact of pasta on blood sugar. Thus, your children will have a full stomach longer, in a healthier way, and they will avoid small cravings before the time of the next meal, or the next snack!
