IBM CEO Arvind Krishna in his interview to the resource Nikkei Asian Review touched on various topics, but the most important for the industry can be considered his forecast regarding the prospects for the development of quantum computing. According to him, in three to five years, quantum computers will find commercial applications. Quantum computers offering between 4,000 and 10,000 qubits are sufficient for this.
This statement was made by the head of IBM in the context of the announcement of cooperation with the University of Tokyo and the University of Chicago in the field of creating a quantum computer with 100,000 qubits in ten years. This project involves an investment from IBM in the amount of $ 100 million. The head of the company is convinced that in the field of quantum computing, project partners will be able to move forward step by step until the corresponding systems allow solving problems that are too complex or costly for conventional supercomputers. The capabilities of quantum computers with 4,000 or 10,000 qubits will be enough to solve problems in the commercial market segment.
Arvind Krishna has no doubts that Japan has the necessary specialists in quantum computing. According to him, only a few realize how far Japanese specialists have advanced in this area.
The head of IBM also believes that the initiative of the Rapidus consortium to master the production of 2-nm products in Japan by 2027 may well be successful, since there are now many Japanese engineers around the world who are experts in the field of lithography, and the implementation of such a project will allow them to return to Japan and work on a forward initiative. “Japan is one of the few places on the planet where the US government would allow us to develop this very advanced 2nm technology, because there are defense agreements between the countries,” Krishna explained. According to him, the success of the Rapidus initiative will allow IBM to expand cooperation with Japanese partners in the future.
