The recent diphtheria outbreak is a cause for concern, but those who are adequately vaccinated need not worry.
Diphtheria, the highly contagious infectious disease, is making a comeback. After only 452 cases were registered across Europe between 2012 and 2021, there was an unusual increase in 2022. By January 2023, Austria, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Norway, the Czech Republic, France and Switzerland had reported a total of 391 cases. Adrian Egli, Director of the Institute for Medical Microbiology at the University of Zurich, reassures: “I see no danger for the Swiss population,” he says. “On the one hand, as a Swiss you have little contact with infected people, on the other hand there is an effective vaccination that most should have.”
