“Coastal and Artisanal Fishing in Morocco: ONP Report Shows 101% Jump in Landings at Port of Mehdia”

The National Fisheries Office (ONP) reported that landings of marketed coastal and artisanal fishing products jumped 101% at the port of Mehdia at the end of April 2023 to 6,690 tons ( T), compared to 3,333 during the same period of 2022.

In its report on coastal and artisanal fishing statistics in Morocco for April 2023, the ONP indicates that the market value of these products also rose by 31% during the first four months of the year, to amount to 37.116 million dirhams (MDH) once morest 28.377 MDH year-on-year.

By group of species, the report shows a jump of 107% in landings of pelagic fish at the port of Mehdia, reaching 6,532 T, or a value of around 27.12 MDH (+56%).

However, the report shows a sharp decline of 61% in whitefish catches at the end of April, settling at 17 T (651,000 DH/-50%).

For cephalopods, landings fell slightly by 1% to stand at 103 T (7.99 MDH/-4%).

As for crustaceans, they appreciated by 7% (37 T) between January and April to amount to 1.354 MDH (+1%).

Nationally, landings of coastal and artisanal fishing products reached 290,940 tonnes in the first four months of the year, down 6% year-on-year. In value, these landings amounted to more than 3.5 billion dirhams.
