Without the presence of star player Federico Bernardeschi, left out following making scathing comments earlier this week, Toronto FC earned their first victory in their last six games, 2-1 once morest DC United.
Toronto had not triumphed since their 1-0 victory on April 29 once morest New York City FC. It’s just the third win in 15 MLS games this season for the Torontonians.
Earlier this week, Bernardeschi said that “we don’t play”, adding that “we play the long pass. We have no idea how to play”.
Bob Bradley’s men were also carried by their other Italian star, Lorenzo Insigne, who collected assists on each of Toronto’s goals in the victory. Leading by two late goals, Toronto saw DC United pull back to 2-1 in the 87th minute but held on.
The meeting began on good footing for the TFC. On a corner kick from Insigne in the 14th minute, Deandre Kerr headed the ball into the top of the net to put Toronto in control. It was Toronto’s first goal in four games.
Toronto waited until the 72nd minute of play before returning to the charge. With good ball movement, Kosi Thompson completed an Insignia handover in fine fashion, pushing the ball into the back of the net to double TFC’s lead.
The Torontonians were scared late in the game when they saw Christian Benteke close the gap on a return, moments following a corner kick. The TFC, however, resisted to get the victory.
Despite winning, Toronto only had possession of the ball for 41% of the game.
