A study that predicts beyond 100 years
Thanks to new modeling of the orbit of the asteroids identified as the “closest” to Earth, scientists have been able to determine their trajectory for the next 1000 years.
By focusing more precisely on the fraction of the orbit that brings the asteroid closest to Earth, the research team was able to determine much more accurately the probabilities of crossing with Earth’s orbit.
The conclusion is reassuring, no major asteroid should enter our orbit before at least the year 3000.
Only one presented a “risk”
Of all the asteroids identified so far, only one posed a greater risk, asteroid 1994 PC1. The latter measures almost a kilometer in diameter.
Thanks to the study, the probability that it will pass in lunar orbit, therefore close to us, has been calculated at 0.00151%. Even though this percentage is very low, it is still 10 times higher than the risk posed by any other asteroid.
Small asteroids are still a threat
Present in greater quantities in space, the smallest asteroids always pose a risk for the Earth and can cause significant damage to our planet.
