Inrae researchers have discovered that the nanoparticles present in titanium dioxide can pass through the mucous membranes of the mouth.
In 2022, France renewed the ban on the additive E171 (titanium dioxide) in foodstuffs. In powder form and made up of particles of titanium dioxide (TiO2), this food additive is used for its coloring and opacifying properties, particularly in sauces and pastries. In May 2021, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considered that the titanium dioxide used as a food additive might no longer be considered safe due to genotoxicity effects which cannot be excluded.
And food use is now prohibited, it is nevertheless present in certain cosmetic products such as toothpaste. Researchers from the National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRAE), in collaboration with the National Metrology and Testing Laboratory of Paris (LNE), have discovered that the nanoparticles present in this additive can pass directly through the mucous membranes of the blocked. Findings have been published in the scientific journal Nanotoxicology.
Oxidative stress
To better understand the effects, INRAE scientists studied the absorption of titanium dioxide by the mucous membranes of the oral cavity and the effect of nanoparticles on human oral cells in culture. “Under these in vivo and in vitro conditions respectively, the tests show that they are indeed rapidly absorbed. Once passed, these damage the DNA of the cells by subjecting them to oxidative stress, affecting the survival of the growing cells, an effect likely to affect the renewal of the oral epithelium.“, underline the release of this study.
In view of these results, the scientists recommend taking into account “direct exposure of the oral cavity to the food additive E171 during the risk assessment in humans, both during its use in food products and in cosmetics (in particular for toothpastes) and in pharmaceuticals“.
