The morning look in the mirror and you realize: there are two new, bristly hairs on your chin. You lost the fight with the tweezers from the day before! But what actually causes witch hair and how do you get rid of it?
Actually, hair on the chin is not unusual and rather inconspicuous. If it weren’t for the particularly nasty little hairs that sneak in there – or in other places too. Colloquially, this hair is called witch or devil hair. In men, too, they find a new home as they get older. Not necessarily on the chin, but then gladly on the shoulders and back.
Causes of witch hair
First of all: Witch hair is mostly completely harmless and often hormonal. However, there are also individual cases in which the hair can indicate a (serious) disease. However, this is the absolute exception.
1. Witch hair: Hormonal change
“Many women notice during pregnancy or during the menopause that they suddenly have hair on their chin. This is usually due to an excess of testosterone,” says dermatologist Dr. Max Tischler from the digital doctor portal onlinedoctor.de to the Berliner Zeitung.
Sleep with wet hair: Yes or no?
Puberty also brings – often in addition to a lot of fashion missteps – a hormonal shift. Which explains certain aberrations in taste and also the sudden growth of witch hair. But there are other causes that can lead to unwanted hair on the chin.
2. Witch Hair: Genetic Factors
If, as a child, you were fascinated by watching your mother struggle with witch hair, chances are you’ll find yourself enjoying the unruly hair too. Because in addition to the hormonal causes, genetic factors are the most common reason why witch hair develops.
3. Witch hair: weight loss
Gaining or losing weight always has an impact on your hormonal balance. Until this has leveled off once more, individual witch hairs can increasingly form.
4. Diseases
Basically, all diseases that affect the testosterone level in the blood can be responsible for witch hair. These include, for example, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome or Cushing’s syndrome. However, these diseases are accompanied by a large number of symptoms – and often also by sudden and very strong hair growth. In the vast majority of cases, the causes of witch hair are completely harmless.
If you are unsure whether a more serious condition might be behind the increased hair growth, please speak to your GP.
How do you get rid of witch hair?
The annoying witch hair can be removed with different methods. Whether plucking, shaving or lasering: As long as the hair is not on a mole, you can choose the method that you prefer.
Lasers: How does IPL hair removal work?
If the hair is directly on a mole, removing it with the tweezers can cause an inflammatory reaction and even promote a pathological change in the mole. In this case it is better to shave – or just leave it. If you have more than three witch hairs, you can also conjure up a cool braided hairstyle. And who knows: maybe this will be the trend of the summer!
