At 85, a gray suit and equally gray hair, Jane Fonda captivated her audience at the Cannes Film Festival, the time of an appointment where she spoke regarding Alain Delon’s kisses and his fight for the planet.

Robert Redford

“I was in love with him. I made four films with him and, each time, I was in love. That means I had a great time (laughs). Except he didn’t like kisses. But he’s someone with a great sense of humor.”

Alain Delon

“Alain Delon… He was the most beautiful living being. And he loved kisses (laughs). He had a lot of cool love scenes…but it was with the other one, (Lola) Albright (laughs).”

Jean-Luc Godard

“As a director, hat, he was immense. But as a man, sorry… No, no”.

Vietnam War

“In 1970, I became an activist. I was living in Paris with (Roger) Vadim and American soldiers who had left Vietnam started talking to me regarding what was going on there. I didn’t believe them because I was convinced that when the Americans were fighting somewhere, we had the angels on our side. And then a soldier gave me Jonathan Schell’s book regarding the village of Ben Suc, Vietnam. When I closed the book, I was a different person.

Climate crisis

“We still have reason to hope… We have seven to eight years to halve our consumption of fossil fuels. And don’t yawn when I say that. Unfortunately, the people with the least responsibility are the most affected. When the ecosystems start to fail, it will be too late for us. (…) The reason why we are not making progress in the United States is because half of the people who are elected, Democrats and Republicans, take money from the fossil fuel industry. ”

Power and Trump

“We have an important presidential election next year. We need to take power. It’s not just protest. There is a tendency on the left not to want leaders. It’s very difficult to talk to people who don’t agree with you, but you shouldn’t be bigoted. I’ve spent a lot of time knocking on the doors of people who live in communities that support Trump.”

Hollywood

“Hollywood is merciless to your soul. But I always had something aside from my career. If I had thought regarding my career, I would never have left America to live in an attic in the Marais (a district of Paris, editor’s note) with Vadim. It wasn’t a very popular place at the time (laughs). I don’t feel like I’m part of Hollywood. I don’t go to parties. Besides, I’m not invited all the time (laughs). Activism has given me a life.”

Feminism

“I was working on Alan J. Pakula’s film +Klute+ (1971)…I had gone to a morgue where I was shown photos of hundreds of women beaten to death. I was horrified, I cried with sadness. During the shooting, I felt the tears come out of my nose, my eyes, and I said to myself: I am becoming a feminist”.

MeToo

“It didn’t stop sexual assault and harassment, but it made women feel like they might speak up and be believed. It’s very important because when you’re the victim of an assault and people don’t believe you, it’s like a double assault, the wound gets worse.”

beauty secrets

“Several years ago, I had cosmetic surgery. I’m not proud of that. But I also have someone very good to do my makeup (laughs). And I sleep a lot. I eat healthy, I exercise, I walk a lot and I am curious. The most important thing is to be curious.”

Age

“I’m almost 86 and I’m flabbergasted that people are still offering me work. I can’t believe I’m still working. But I no longer want to act in films that don’t represent a challenge for me as an actress. I want to play complicated roles.”
