The new Motorola Edge 40 it’s here, it has a lot of good things, starting with its slim and elegant design, cameras that match or even surpass the Pro version. The first smartphone in the world to come with an f/1.4 camera aperture, now with IP68, but the big question is: has it evolved in relation to the Edge 30? Would it be an Edge 30 Fusion with water protection? What price range is a great deal on the Edge 40? I answer all these questions here in this review, I’m Nicolas Muller, this is my review of the Motorola Edge 40.
Motorola’s Edge 40 was launched on May 4, 2023, in Brazil it arrived costing BRL 3,999 with a single version of 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.
cameras
In cameras, we have a great highlight of the main sensor with an aperture of f / 1.4, so far the largest aperture in a smartphone camera sensor. This means that the camera lets in more light and in theory night shots tend to be better, we’ll see. In addition to this sensor, we have a 13MP sensor with an ultrawide lens and to finish a 32MP sensor in the selfie camera. Photo gallery below.
I confess that I had difficulties taking some photos, the ones with the sun in the background it was difficult to find the lighting, when I focused on the people the background exploded and when I moved the camera from place to place, the focal point came off and you had to take it once more press for the camera to illuminate the person. Also, when the background was well lit, HDR to compensate for the lighting in less lit areas overdid the saturation.
The portrait mode of the rear camera works just right, the blur can be controlled in the camera, but artificially, you choose how much you want to simulate the blur. In standard mode the photo looks good, objects in the foreground are in focus and the background is blurred.
To take pictures of landscapes, those who like more vibrant colors will like the result.
In night photos, we can say that there was a great advance of generations, the traditional photo that we took here on the channel proves that the Edge 40 has much more sharpness, more realistic colors and more adequate lighting. The Edge 30 lit too much, trying to bring light where there was none.
Ultrawide
The ultrawide photos follow the same pattern as the main one, as well as the main one, when the background is brightly lit the colors end up being super saturated, as you can see in those photos of the sunset.
Selfies
The selfies have the same standard as the main and ultrawide ones, with good sharpness, colors that work when the cell phone has favorable light exposure. When confronted with light, the colors vibrate too much.

Battery
The battery has 4400mAh despite not being one of the largest is a strong point for autonomy. Our battery test is quite complex and stressful for the smartphone. We put the device to run 7 different scenarios, going through surfing the internet and social networks, watching videos on Youtube, recording videos with the camera and playing games. Thus simulating the intense use of a day, all of this reserved for a period of 7h45 minutes.
- Summary: The Edge 40 failed to complete the tests, it came close, making 7h40min of screen time. Guess what, it did the same screen time as Edge 30 Fusion.
- Loading time: The Edge 40 takes 40min to charge from 0 to 100% charge using the original 68W charger. It does not have wireless charging. It was among the top 10 fastest charging phones in our tests.
- ❌ Did not complete the cycle;
- Battery: 4400mAh;
- Charger: 68W;
- Consumption: The battery is 100%;
- screen time: Withstood 7h40min;
- Loading: 40min.
hardware and performance
In hardware we have the MediaTek processor the Dimensity 8020, it comes with a version of 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Did the choice to change a Qualcomm for a MediaTek work out? We analyzed it in benchmark applications as well as in games.
In the AnTuTu benchmark, one of the most complete tests, the Edge 40 scored 687 thousand points, once morest 606 thousand for the Edge 30. It ranks 17th out of 52 cell phones that have already passed the AnTuTu tests here.
In CPU Throttling, the Edge 40 had an average of 170 thousand points, once morest 214 thousand for the Edge 30. I’ll leave here a link to the complete performance ranking, where you can compare the cell phones.
In games, the Edge 40 surprised anyone who thinks the Dimensity 8020 wouldn’t do well. In COD Mobile he hit 60 frames, in Mortal Kombat, one of the games that releases more than 60 frames, Edge 40 made 120 frames. PUBG, Edge 40 did 90 frames with high stability.
Design and Construction
The Edge 40’s design is a strong point. This smartphone is very beautiful, the feeling of having it in your hands is also great. It is thin, with rounded screen corners, which in my opinion is pleasant and comfortable. Motorola does not apply a film on the screen, which it did on the Edge 30 Fusion, I think it should have. Also, it doesn’t come with a silicone case either, so buy it as it’s easy to fall off.
The back has a vegan leather texture, which is a kind of rubbery texture, good to grip.
The great advantage of this smartphone is the IP68 protection, something that anyone who follows me knows how much I’ve been talking and talking regarding. It is not possible for a top-of-the-line smartphone not to have this technology employed, finally, now we have it.
Bodies
The screen is a strong point of the product. In addition to being beautiful, it has very vibrant colors and great sharpness. Pointing it out in front of you is something you look at and say, that’s a good canvas. Motorola uses pOLED panels in practically all products that use the technology, there was prejudice with this screen being made of polymer, a kind of plastic, but in cases of rounded screens like this, only panels like this can deliver good quality. It has 6.55″, FHD resolution with 144Hz refresh rate and features HDR10+.
Motorola took advantage of the curve of the screen to customize notifications to emit lights in the corners, so when the smartphone is facing down, you know if you have any notifications.
Finally, the screen has a fingerprint sensor below it, I already prefer it on the side, but in terms of sophistication, below the screen makes more sense.
Price and competitors
The Edge 40 was launched for R$3,999, a few days following the launch it is costing R$3,600. This value is far from something we consider good to buy the product. So much so that its predecessor, the Edge 30, arrived costing the same price and a few months later the price reached BRL 2,300 and the lowest price below BRL 2,000. The amount I consider ideal to pay for it in 2023 is R$ 2,800. It is very similar to the Edge 30 Fusion, I would say, an Edge 30 Fusion with IP68, which is why the R$2,800 price is the ideal value to pay for the Edge 40.
Where to buy?
Conclusion
Motorola delivered a new cell phone, but it might be called the Edge 30 Fusion Plus, which was new only with protection once morest water and some advancement in the camera, otherwise, it is the same smartphone with the same behaviors.
What we can draw from the conclusion of the Edge 40 is that we had an improvement over the regular Edge 30, in the following points:
- Inclusion of IP68, something that was required by the public in at least high-end smartphones.
- Improved cameras: The main camera has had a good upgrade in relation to low light, this is evident in the tests we carried out. There are still improvements to be sought by Motorola, I didn’t like the exaggerated work in saturating the colors in photos with a lot of backlighting.
- Performance with MediaTek was basically increased, nothing exceptional, but it improved.
- The battery might last longer.
- Starting price: The starting price being launched at the same price as the predecessor and some upgrades is something I welcome. Despite Motorola having removed the protective film and cover from the box.
The grades the Edge 40 received were:
- Cameras: 9,1
- Battery: 7,8
- Performance: 9,5
- Design and construction: 9,8
- Bodies: 8,6
- GENERAL RESULT: 9,0
With this result, the Edge 40 took 9th place in our ranking of the best cell phones analyzed here at Oficina da Net, behind the Galaxy S22+.
