Banjul, May 25 (APS) – The President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Edawrd Amaoko Asante, called Thursday in Banjul, for the appointment as soon as possible of an authority responsible for the execution of the court’s judgments community in some of its member states.
”I would like to launch a solemn appeal to Benin, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Niger and Sierra Leone and Liberia to proceed with the appointment of an authority responsible for overseeing the execution of the judgments of the ECOWAS Court of Justice”, declared the Ghanaian judge in particular.
He was speaking in the Gambian capital at the close of an international conference devoted to changes of government by unconstitutional means. The open meeting on Monday is at the initiative of the community jurisdiction.
Only 30% of judgments of the ECOWAS Court of Justice executed
Edawrd Amaoko Asante at the same time called on the Member States to make efforts in the execution of the decisions of the Court of Justice in order to strengthen the confidence of the citizens and contribute to “increasing the credibility of the jurisdiction”.
He pointed out that only 30% of the judgments of the ECOWAS Court of Justice had so far been executed in all the Member States.
To remedy this state of affairs, the conference participants recommended, among other things, better collaboration between the ECOWAS Court of Justice and national jurisdictions in the defense of human rights.
They did not fail to recommend the development of an action plan and the commitment of the national authorities to execute court decisions in collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission.
