François Braun calls for “zero tolerance”, caregivers highlight the tensions linked to the lack of means

How can we better ensure the safety of caregivers and hospitals? Three days following the tragedy at the CHU de Reims, where a nurse was fatally stabbed by a man suffering from psychiatric disorders, professionals in the sector were urgently summoned to the Ministry of Health, Thursday, May 25, to discuss the issue.

They emerged without new measures, but with a message reaffirmed by their supervisory minister: in the face of violence, “the only position is zero tolerance”assured François Braun, facing an audience of representatives of practitioners, directors, doctors, nurses… Several unions of hospital staff, including FO and the CGT, nevertheless refused to participate in the meeting, denouncing a “communication operation”.

In the establishments, the general feeling is that of an increase in tensions. “Today we are indeed facing a context of increased violence that affects our caregivers”affirmed, on Thursday, the Minister of Health, and “which crosses the whole of society”.

Every day, 35 cases of attacks on nurses

Since the assassination of nurse Carène Mézino, there is no shortage of figures to tell of a hospital faced with ever greater tensions. This May 25, the national order of nurses delivered a new census: two caregivers out of three have already been victims of violence in their professional practice, according to a consultation carried out with 31,000 nurses. Three-quarters report insults, whether they were victims or witnesses; almost half from physical threats; more than a third report beatings…

Another source, another figure: every day, there are 35 cases of attacks on nurses, mainly in emergencies, psychiatry and geriatrics, recorded by the National Union of Nursing Professionals.

A national body, the National Observatory of Violence in the Health Environment, has the official mission of drawing up, each year, an inventory, all exercises and all trades combined. According to the latest report to date, relating to the year 2021, 19,328 reports of attacks on persons or property were reported to him. 22% of them come from psychiatric units or structures. The two other main sources of reports, almost equal (just over 12%), are nursing homes (and long-term care units) and emergencies.

“Systematic prosecution of the perpetrators of any violent act”

Entrance door to the hospital, open 24 hours a day, emergency services are “obviously in the front line”in the words of Marc Noizet, boss of SAMU-Urgences de France, who first evokes violence linked to the effects of alcohol, or patients with psychiatric disorders who may find themselves there in a state of great agitation. “It is intolerable that caregivers come today to work with a lump in their stomachs, knowing that some patients will insult them, slap them, spit on them…”underlines the emergency doctor, who advocates a “global response” ranging from prevention to tools to manage these situations.
