Unveils the mysterious disappearance of 49-year-old Melissa Caddick the Australian police A mystery: Caddick disappeared from her luxury home in Sydney, around three months later her partially decomposed foot was found on a remote beach 500 kilometers south of the city. Was it a suicide? To this day, only one thing is certain: Elizabeth Ryan, Assistant Medical Examiner State of New South Walesconcluded Thursday, following a lengthy investigation, that Melissa Caddick is dead.
The woman was last seen on November 12, 2020 when Financial Regulator officers raided her home in the chic suburb of Dover Heights in the early morning. Then she went jogging, her husband Anthony Koletti told the police. The woman left her car and all her personal belongings behind. It was only 30 hours later that Koletti reported his wife missing.
Won up to 17 million francs with pyramid scheme
At the time, authorities were investigating allegations that Caddick had run a Ponzi scheme for eight years, stealing A$20-$30 million in funds from more than 60 investors — including friends and family members — to fund their lavish lifestyle. Caddick indulged in travel in private jets, luxury cars, designer clothes and expensive jewelry.
Their methods were “not particularly complicated,” as the investigators explained. The fraudster posed as a financial advisor and told her customers that she had invested the money in investments. She reported the alleged profits with fake trading documents. When new clients gave Caddick money to invest, she paid out a portion as a dividend to existing clients before keeping the rest for herself.
Caddick is gone – so are the millions
After Caddick’s disappearance, police initially pursued two theories: either Caddick was alive, or she had gone into hiding to avoid justice, or she had taken her own life. When her foot was found and DNA analysis confirmed the woman’s identity, the wildest theories circulated on social media: Caddick might have been swallowed by a shark or she may have cut off her own foot to throw police on the wrong track .
Coroner Ryan suspects that the raid that morning almost two and a half years ago “probably caused a catastrophic level of shame and despair” in Melissa Caddick.
The case will probably remain unsolved, says Ryan – just like the disappearance of the millions of their customers who have not seen their invested money once more to this day.
