The first mounted brigade of the canton of Geneva made a demonstration in front of the authorities Thursday for its inauguration. It will fulfill preventive missions. From a pilot project in 2017, it is becoming permanent.
Inauguration this Thursday morning at the Equestrian Center of Plan-les-Ouates of the first mounted brigade of the Geneva police. The purpose of this brigade currently made up of three riders: to carry out missions in areas that are difficult to access, such as participating in hunts, searching for people or even carrying out prevention missions around the CEVA, at the beach of Les Eaux -vives or on the Cliffs trail.
This brigade, now permanent, was initiated via a pilot project in 2017. It should grow and include up to ten riders. It will also ensure the implementation of the animal protection law, which punishes animal abuse. A brigade which has all its usefulness, according to the Councilor of State in charge of security Mauro Poggia.
And this despite its cost. The horses come from the Franches-Montagnes. They cost around 10,000 francs and the monthly pension at the equestrian center of Plan-les-Ouates, 900 francs per horse. An expense nevertheless justified for the Councilor of State.
The pilot project started at the Darwin refuge, with horses that might not follow this type of training. It continues today with the horses of the Franches-Montagnes. The equestrian brigade has trained the horses to deal with smoke bombs, for example, but also to walk on pet bottles. The Geneva police took the advice of the army and the Belgian police for the training of these horses, but also of the Equestrian Center of Plan-les-Ouates which ensures the maintenance of the animals.
