“Disease X: The Next Global Health Emergency?”

Geneva: That Covid-19, which claimed the lives of seven million people, is no longer a global emergency Days following the announcement by the World Health Organization (WHO), ‘Disease X’ has raised fears among experts. It is concluded that this newly discovered unknown disease will be more deadly than the covid pandemic.

The ‘X’ factor in ‘Disease X’ is so called because the cause of the disease is not known. WHO started using this term from 2018. The New York Post reports that medical experts around the world are clamoring for increased funding to support surveillance and research to prevent and combat the outbreak of Disease X.

  • What is Disease X?

In June last year, Britain’s health experts warned the UK government to prepare for ‘Disease X’ amid reports of poliovirus, monkey flu, Lassa fever and bird flu found in sewage samples from London.

In 2017, the World Health Organization published a list of pathogens that might cause a deadly pandemic. The list included Covid-19, Ebola virus disease, Marburg virus disease, Lassa fever, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Nipah and Zika. After this, the covid broke out all over the world. Disease X is also included in this list. Therefore, attention should be paid to the unknown disease.

  • What might be the nature of disease X?

Some public health experts believe that disease X might be ‘zoonotic’ like Ebola and Covid. That is, it can be a disease that originates from animals and then spreads to humans. The world has witnessed the death of HIV/AIDS and Covid-19.

Experts also do not ignore the possibility of an engineered pandemic pathogen. Some health articles suggest that the spread of such pathogens through laboratory accidents or as part of an act of bioterrorism might also lead to a pandemic, Disease X. Another possible source might be ‘zombie’ viruses that have been trapped in permafrost or other frozen landscapes for centuries.

  • WHO’s warning

The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, issued a warning on Wednesday. He said that the world should be prepared for the next epidemic which may be more deadly than Covid-19. This warning by the head of the World Health Organization, Ghebreyesus, comes at a time when the number of Covid-19 cases around the world is somewhat stable.

The threat of another variant causing a new surge in disease and death remains, and the threat of another potentially lethal pathogen emerging, he said.
