Liver cancer is the 18th most common type, but unlike some other cancers, which have seen rates fall, diagnoses and deaths from liver cancer have gone up.
There are several risk factors that increase the incidence of this type of cancer, with alcohol alone thought to account for around seven in 100 diagnoses.
On the other hand, both being overweight and smoking can be linked to regarding 20% of cases of liver cancer, according to the British newspaper “Express”.
As with any disease, the sooner you spot symptoms of liver cancer, the sooner you can seek treatment.
However, liver cancer in its early stages often does not show symptoms.
According to Cancer Research UK, there are 3 signs of the disease that appear in the abdomen, and they include:
Flatulence
Tummy ache
Lump on the right side of the abdomen.
So you should consult your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.
Cancer Research UK explained why liver cancer affects the abdomen, listing two possible causes for the swelling.
This may be because the liver is getting bigger due to the growth of the cancer, causing swelling on the right side of the abdomen.
In addition, cancer (or cirrhosis) increases pressure in the liver, which causes blood to back up into the vessels (venules).
This forces fluid out of the veins into the abdomen (ascites).
The increased pressure in the veins also makes them bulge so that they can be seen below the surface of your abdomen.
Ascites also develops when the liver does not produce enough blood protein (albumin).
Cancer Research UK says: “Flatulence may cause discomfort or pain and loss of appetite or feeling full quickly.”
An enlarged liver causes pain in your right shoulder. This is because the enlarged liver stimulates the nerves that connect to the shoulder nerves. This is called referred pain.
Other symptoms of liver cancer include:
Weight loss
Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
itching
feeling sick
Loss of appetite or feeling full following eating small amounts
Pain in your right shoulder
