Deep concern, this Tuesday morning, for the parents of the first and second year students of the INDSé in Bastogne. They were indeed very surprised to learn that their child had not shown up at school. The school was bombarded with phone calls.
“This morning, I received an SMS from the school secretaryexplains a mother. He informed me that my daughter had not shown up to school. I did not understand anything because I knew that she had gone there, as usual. Very worried, I called immediately but I did not have anyone on the other end of the line. A few minutes later, I received a new SMS, then an email with the explanation: my daughter was fine in class! The SMS had been sent by mistake due to a computer bug. I was reassured.”
Patrick Delsalle, director of first degree at the Institut Notre-Dame Séminaire, was also very surprised to learn that parents whose children were well in class had been informed of their absence.
“We investigated why these text messages were sent and found that the computer program was involved, he explains. Every morning, the educators take attendance. Absences are reported to parents directly, around 9 am. This morning, a few students were absent and only their parents had to be notified. However, a computer bug has occurred. The data has been reversed. The SMS was sent to parents who were not concerned. 550 students were reported absent whilethat theywere present in class.
The director specifies that the parents were quickly informed of the computer bug, by SMS, then by email. “We have been reporting absences this way for 20 years, this is the first time this problem has arisen. We apologize to the parents “, he concludes.
