Samsung Display unveils the first OLED screen integrating a fingerprint and heart rate reader

The Samsung Display company manufactures screens for the vast majority of smartphones of different brands. It has just announced the forthcoming availability of a new OLED screen, called Sensor OLED, capable of recognizing fingerprints anywhere on the surface and measuring the user’s heart rate. These panels will be integrated into the next high-end mobiles. It remains to be seen which ones.

Today there are mainly two suppliers of OLED screens for the smartphone industry: Samsung Display and BOE. The Samsung Display company notably delivers screens for Samsung mobiles, but also for many other brands. On the occasion of SID Display Week 2023, which is currently taking place in Los Angeles in the United States, the company presents the world’s first OLED screen incorporating a fingerprint biosensor also capable of measuring blood pressure. Typically, fingerprint sensors are installed under the OLED panel of smartphones as a separate item. But the, Samsung Display managed to integrate the organic light-sensing photodiode into the panel itself. In addition, this solution is effective on the entire surface of the screen. It is thus possible to measure the user’s heart rate, blood pressure and stress level with a simple touch of two fingers on the screen.

How does it work?

The technology relies on the fact that the OLED light that is sent during a check is reflected differently depending on the contraction and relaxation of the blood vessels inside the finger and when it returns to the panel. The organic light-detecting photodiode (OPD) recognizes it and converts it into actionable health data. Currently, Vivo and Xiaomi offer, on the respective models X90 Pro, Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro, modules at the screen level capable of recognizing fingerprints, but also to measure the heart rate, but not using the integration technology offered here by Samsung Display. This last also enables the detection of several fingers in order to obtain more precise results and in particular to measure blood pressure (requiring two measurements, one for each arm).

For the moment, it is for Samsung Display to show its know-how in the field of screens for smartphones. This new panel might soon be available for manufacturers who want to use them in their devices. There is a good chance that the next most high-end smartphones will be equipped with it with, perhaps in the lead, the future series of Samsung Galaxy S24 mobiles whose presentation is expected for the beginning of next year.
