“Brussels Traffic: A Deep Dive into the City’s Congestion Crisis”

By analyzing the data of users of its navigation services in real time, the Dutch TomTom establishes an annual barometer of traffic jams in the world. And Brussels takes 14th place in this ranking… not very glorious.

Fewer cars but more traffic jams

Since 2015, the number of cars in circulation in the capital has not increased. At peak times, it even decreased. However, road traffic is not weakening! In 2019, Brussels was the 16th worst city in the world for traffic. She reached the 14th place three years later.

The Brussels Region wishes to encourage alternative travel to the car such as public transport, walking or cycling. A will requiring adjustments which necessarily have an impact on car traffic. The three traffic lanes of Boulevard Général Jacques in Ixelles, for example, have been reduced in places to make room for a cycle path. Developments like this leave de facto less space for motorists.

According to the Belgian Automobile Monitor, commuters in Brussels must count on average 25 min 30 s to cover 10 km, at a speed of 20 km/h. A considerable loss of time… Every year motorists lose up to 236 hours, or nearly 10 days, in traffic jams!
