NEW YORK — Gerrit Cole became the third-fastest pitcher to reach 2,000 career strikeouts in AL/NL history, reaching the milestone Tuesday night once morest the Orioles at Yankee Stadium.
Cole reached number 2,000 with his second fan of the night, retiring Jorge Mateo by swinging in the second inning.
Tuesday’s is the 278th career game for the star right-hander. Only Randy Johnson (262 games) and Clayton Kershaw (277) have reached the fastest 2,000 strikeouts in terms of games thrown.
Cole (1,714.2 innings) is also the third fastest in AL/NL history to reach 2,000 innings pitched, trailing only Chris Sale (1,626) and Pedro Martinez (1,711.1).
He is the 87th pitcher to reach 2,000 strikeouts and the eighth to do so with the Yankees, joining David Cone, Dwight Gooden, Catfish Hunter, Mike Mussina, Bobo Newsom, Andy Pettitte and CC Sabathia.
