Californian researchers have identified ten insecticides, herbicides and fungicides that are responsible for an increased risk of neurological degeneration.

rom thousands of products approved in California, researchers at Harvard University and the Ucla Health network of hospitals have successfully identified those that increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

For this, they explain in Nature Communications having examined the exposure history of 829 patients and almost as many healthy controls, all living in the Central Valley. “We have identified all the pesticides used by farmers in an area of ​​500 meters around their residential and professional addresses since 1974”.

This work enabled them to draw up a list of 53 molecules potentially involved in Parkinson’s disease. The researchers then took cells from patients to assess in vitro their toxicity towards the dopaminergic neurons involved in the regulation of movements.

10 caused neuronal degeneration, including 3 herbicides used in viticulture, basic copper sulphates and pentahydrate, and folpel, 4 insecticides (dicofol, endosulfan, naled, and propargite), and 3 herbicides (diquat, endothall, and trifluralin ).

Even more toxic if combined

Continuing their tests, the researchers discovered that the combination of pesticides increases their toxicity a little more. They will now try to better understand how phytos disrupt the neural system.
