Why would China want to build its own satellite constellation in low earth orbit?
Be careful with Starlink.
China’s People’s Liberation Army calls for:
Starlink is a vast network of communications satellites designed to provide high-bandwidth Internet connectivity to remote areas without electricity or telephones.
Essential equipment for the war in Ukraine
However, the People’s Liberation Army’s official newspaper, the People’s Liberation Army Daily, warns that high-ranking government officials in Washington, D.C., are undoubtedly taking advantage of this.
When Starlink became available in Russia-invaded Ukraine last year, he slammed it as the “guru” of a “hegemon-obsessed United States.”
Never mind that it was Ukraine itself that asked SpaceX for help.
Starlink has become an integral part of Ukraine’s war effort.
It’s all thanks to this network that allows soldiers to communicate, identify targets for attacks, and post videos for the world to see.
Interfering with this system’s communications is difficult.
From China’s point of view, Starlink not only puts ally Russia at a disadvantage, but also causes worry regarding Taiwan.
Having access to Starlink in Taiwan would make an invasion by China much more difficult.
But China’s concerns don’t stop there.
The country fears the United States will continue to expand its territory in low earth orbit via Starlink.
China also wants to become a powerhouse in this field. They also want the abilities offered by systems like Starlink.
That’s why it’s embarking on building its own satellite constellation.
