Vienna (OTS) (Austrian hail insurance, May 23, 2023): This followingnoon, the first severe thunderstorms of this year raged over Austria with hail, heavy rain and sometimes stormy winds. Especially from the Waldviertel to the eastern lowlands and from the Graz area to southern Burgenland, storm cells have spread and have caused severe damage to agriculture in some cases: “After the first inspections by our experts, we expect total damage in the federal states of Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria to amount to 3 million euros, including 2 million euros in Styria alone. On an agricultural area of ​​total 9,000 Hectares arable crops and fruit crops in particular were damaged”, so Dr. Mario Winklerspokesman for the Austrian hail insurance, in a first balance sheet.

Damage overview in detail – Styria:

  • Affected districts: Graz area, Weiz
  • Crops affected: Cereals, stone and pome fruit including net damage, strawberries, vegetables, grassland
  • Area affected: 3,500 hectares
  • Total damage in agriculture: 2 million euros

Lower Austria:

  • Affected districts: Horn, Gänserndorf, Mistelbach, Wr. Neustadt country
  • Affected crops: cereals, vines, orchards, grassland
  • Area affected: 4,000 hectares
  • Total damage in agriculture: 700,000 euros

Burgenland:

  • Affected districts: Güssing, Mattersburg
  • Affected crops: Cereals, corn, soybeans, strawberries (partly in the harvest)
  • Area affected: 1,500 hectares
  • Total damage in agriculture: 300,000 euros
