Several factors, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi that live naturally on the skin, medications, poor hygiene, hormones, and food, can affect body odor.

Deodorants and perfumes can mask unpleasant odors, but body odor can become an indication of a health problem, according to the “Mirror” website.

What does body odor reveal?

1- Kidney problems

The kidneys are essential for eliminating toxins and waste from the body through urine, and the protein in the body breaks down and creates a toxic product called ammonia.

The ammonia is then converted into a less toxic waste called urea which is usually excreted when you urinate.

If the kidneys are not working properly, they may not be able to get rid of urea, and the buildup of urea in the body makes your breath and sweat smell like eggs.

2- Liver problems

A urine-like odor on the breath may also be a sign that the liver is not working well.

The liver performs important functions, including making bile to help digest food and rid the body of harmful substances.

3- Diabetic ketoacidosis

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can lead to a very noticeable fruity or nail polish-like odor.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious condition that occurs when the body lacks insulin, and starts burning fat instead of glucose for energy.

4- Lung or mouth problems

It is normal for bad breath to arise when you wake up, but a bad smell that does not go away even following brushing your teeth may indicate a health problem.

Pneumonia can cause foul-smelling saliva and breath. Tuberculosis can also cause significantly bad breath. Halitosis can also be a sign of gum disease or a sore throat.

5- Bowel problems

A blockage of the small or large intestine can prevent the passage of some nutrients or fluids. A complete blockage is a serious, life-threatening condition that, if not treated, may cause the intestine to rupture.

In these cases, the breath becomes very strong and bad, as the stool smells very much.

6- Urinary tract problems

Bacteria entering the urinary tract can cause problems, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI). In addition to cloudy urine, pain or burning when urinating, urine may have a strong, foul odor.
