It is often not easy to determine the exact number of devices delivered by a brand during a given period. Generally, specialists are content with figures published by manufacturers. This can ultimately bias the different results.
However, there are indicators that allow for more conclusive conclusions. This is the case with purchases of LCD television panels as part of a study to determine the biggest seller of televisions. It must be said that today almost all new televisions have a TV panel. Thus, ranking manufacturers by the number of panels they purchased from other suppliers makes sense.
A drop in purchases at Samsung and LG
On behalf of the first quarter of the year, the Omdia company specializing in market research in the technology industry decided to compare the purchases of LCD panels made by different brands of televisions. Reports released by the company showed that Samsung purchased 14% of all LCD panels delivered by the various vendors during the quarter.
The South Korean giant is closely followed by TCL and Hisense, which respectively record 13% and 10% of purchases. The other South Korean manufacturer, LG, takes fourth place with nearly 9.5% of purchases. Compared to the previous year’s figures, South Korean brands fell compared to their Chinese competitors.
However, this bad news ultimately hides a reality that is more heartening for businesses in the Land of the Morning Calm. If they are buying fewer LCD panels, it is not because they are delivering fewer televisions. They have changed their strategy by now focusing their efforts on QLED and OLED televisions.
However, they themselves manufacture the panels they need to produce this type of television. Samsung and LG no longer need to turn to other manufacturers for the LCD panels they need. They continue to sell as many televisions as in the past.

Rise of Chinese manufacturers
Unlike their South Korean counterparts, Chinese manufacturers still continue to bet on conventional LCD screens. This forces them to resort massively to importing panels for their activities.
But that’s not to say that in the field of TV sales, TCL and Hisense haven’t made progress. Thanks to the low-end and mid-range televisions that both manufacturers manufacture, they have managed to increase their sales in emerging markets such as India. Which on the one hand increased the number of LCD panels they purchased during the first quarter. On the other hand, it definitely improved their TV sales.
But of course, this state of affairs is not yet enough for Chinese brands to pass Samsung. Already, the South Korean manufacturer is buying more and more LCD panels. In addition to that, it produces a good portion of its billboards. For the final verdict, it must be said that Samsung is still the biggest TV brand in the world in 2023.
However, Chinese competition has become much stronger and should continue to grow in the months to come. Samsung should continue to innovate if it does not want to see its hegemony come to an end. For its part, LG must wake up to this competition from the Middle Kingdom if it does not want to be completely erased from the shelves.
