Where he is is German television history with legend and icon status. Sharpness, wit and quick-wittedness were and are his constant companions. In the APA interview, Harald Schmidt lets it be known that he “very, very much likes to see Donald Trump”, that the discredited Gerhard Schröder “impresses him in a certain way”, that the media “fight once morest the downfall” and that he only then Comeback celebrates when the monarchy is proclaimed once more in Austria.
Afterwards, Schmidt once once more provided proof that a grandmaster like himself – perfectly tuned – can be resized to a cabaret stage. For the second time he made a guest appearance – in a “double dialogue” with director Hakon Hirzenberger – at the “Steudltenn” theater festival in the Zillertal. A much applauded tour de force of the Schmidt brand, tears of laughter included.
APA: Mr. Schmidt, how does your view of Austria look from the outside?
Harald Schmidt: Absolutely positive. The stock market is doing well. Also the industrial location. But apart from that I live of course in touristic and theatrical Austria. My Austria is that of the Sissi films or the homeland films with Oskar Sima, Gunther Philipp, Paula Wessely.
APA: Speaking of local stars. Helmut Berger left us. He made some legendary appearances on their Sat.1 show in the 1990s. your memory?
Schmidt: One of my best guests, a real star. He brought in such a touch of the lost jet set world. Didn’t miss anything in life. The best thing was: Once he just came from a birthday party of Ron Wood from the Rolling Stones in Berlin. I asked, ‘Then you know Jerry Hall too?’ Then he: ‘Bitch. I had her before Mick (Jagger, note)’. There aren’t any more guys like that these days. Today there is a mass of short-term stars, small stars. But there are no longer these life stories as with Berger: the hotelier’s son from Bad Ischl, who is formed by an Italian nobleman (Visconti, note). The moral scandal no longer exists either. One has become adapted, politically correct, streamlined. They always apologize too. Because the execution by social media follows on the spot. It used to be possible to break a taboo because there were more things that were supposedly impossible.
APA: We felt a permanent crisis. How do you see the role of the media? Is reality depicted or is a distorted image sometimes produced?
Schmidt: The classic media are fighting once morest collapse. I hear from newspaper editors that we have more 100-year-old subscribers than 20-year-olds. The subscribers are dying away, so clicks have to be generated and everything jazzed up on an insane topic. However, this is often a pure media bubble, the majority of which does not even notice. People are interested in what goes on their wallets. The German is currently wondering: Can I keep my heating or do I have to rip out the boiler. But as far as the crises are concerned, the result of all surveys in Germany is something like this: ‘Overall I see black, but personally I’m fine.’
APA: Next year is the US presidential election. It is quite possible that Trump will make a comeback. your assessment?
Schmidt: I like to see him very, very much. As a media professional. The way he comes along, with a coat and a long tie. I think half of Americans say good man. Here in Europe, you have no idea how many people there like the way he talks and acts. And Biden: I hear him saying every third sentence twice. But I don’t know if he’s doing it because the sentence is so important, or if he’s forgotten that he just said it. Our American friends will decide how the election turns out.
APA: Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is still in the crossfire because of his proximity to Russia. Justified?
Schmidt: Since he does it so consistently, I wonder if there’s something we don’t know anything regarding. Maybe we’ll have another big surprise. I think he knows what he’s doing. Because the wind blowing once morest him is quite strong.
APA: Do you have any respect for it?
Schmidt: It impresses me in a certain way.
APA. Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck of the Greens is also in the middle of a crisis. His secretary of state had to leave because of nepotism.
Schmidt: Morality was carried too far. I’ll just say: “Learn from Trump, Boris Johnson and Silvio Berlusconi”. These three choice professionals have never claimed anything other than what they do. They let it rip. But in general, the following applies to me: Please only scandals from Wirecard upwards. 2 billion minimum.
APA: The ‘conditions’ on the sets by and with Til Schweiger recently caused a media tremor and horror. What do you think?
Schmidt: I’ve known all the stories for decades. For years, this was considered a sign of special artistic quality. I also wanted to smack employees who were getting on my nerves, but I was too drunk to meet them (laughs, note). No: I was always super clean, they have to be clean backstage.
APA: Did you see the coronation of King Charles III? tracked? Our Federal President was there and said followingwards that he was now an even more convinced Republican.
Schmidt: As a monarchist, that was a must for me. The British monarchy is priceless, especially for tourism. As a guest in this country, I respect Mr Van der Bellen’s opinion. Only: Few tourists come to Vienna and want to find out where the President lives, but rather: Where did Sissi eat ice cream, where are the Lipizzaners?
APA: The inevitable question: A Late Night Show comeback is out of the question?
Schmidt: Just in case the monarchy is not reintroduced in Austria.
APA: The headline for your life, Mr. Schmidt?
Schmidt: ‘I was lucky’.
