A wide controversy erupted in Lebanon, following a woman complained that she was prevented from staying on the popular Sidon beach (belonging to the municipality), while wearing a “bikini”.

A woman said that clerics came to her and asked her husband to leave the beach in the southern coastal city, in implementation of the instructions at its entrance, one of whose clauses states that it is forbidden to wear immodest dress.

With the interaction of the story, a group of feminist activists organized a protest stand in Sidon Beach, demanding their freedom to dress.

On the other hand, a number of the city’s residents gathered and performed collective prayers, stressing the need to preserve the city’s conservative identity.

Activists said that restricting dress code, on a public beach, in a country of diverse religions and cultures, is unacceptable and calls for congestion.

While others responded that some beaches in Lebanon prevent the entry of veiled women, and that the people of Sidon have the right to preserve the character of their city.

On Saturday, the Sidon municipality issued a decision banning the women’s demonstration and another counter to it, calling for it “in support of modesty and virtue and once morest nudity.”

Lebanese law does not prohibit wearing bathing suits in public places, but women who want to wear them in the conservative coastal city often prefer to go to private pools.
