The US Washington Post reported that Russia is claiming the complete occupation of Bakhmut, the largest battleground in eastern Ukraine, but Ukraine is trying to encircle it instead of surrendering the city center.
According to reports, Regimental General Oleksandr Shirski, commander of the Eastern Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, visited the Bakhmut front line and found that Ukrainian forces were holding a small section under control.
He said the Ukrainian military’s new objective was a tactical encirclement around Bahmut.
The comments came following Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary company, claimed to have full control of Bahmut on the 20th local time.
After Prigozhin’s remarks, the Russian Ministry of Defense also announced the occupation of Bahmut, and observations emerged that the 10-month war of attrition might lead to a Russian victory.
Bakhmut, a city in the northeastern part of Donetsk Province, where 70,000 people lived before the Russian invasion, is the site of the longest fighting since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year.
