Once the return of the University Assembly, one of the fundamental organs of its co-government, has been defined, the National University of Comahue works on the project to become the first house of higher intercultural studies in Argentina.
The Superior Council unanimously approved to reactivate the University Assembly on March 12 and 13, 2024 and established a schedule for the presentation of issues to be discussed in Ad Hoc commissions, then they must be approved by the Superior Council to be part of the Assembly.
From driving the One, Rector Beatriz Gentile, announced that they are working on the project that was part of their campaign platform, to declare to the UNCo intercultural. And in that sense progress is made.
The debate is just beginning but it is the “step by step” that will define the path to achieve the goal. The rector assured that there is consensus and that it is a possible objective to achieve.
“We understand that the interculturality it is built and that is not given, it is not decreed. Therefore, it is an experience that must be passed through and in that sense, we are taking these first steps that seem to us to be very encouraging”, said the history doctor.
In fact, in this “everyone learn how to do it”, the leadership of the university began a dialogue with Mapuche communities of Neuquen and Rio Negro to build the project.
The question is: Why is an intercultural university necessary?
The answer is: “So that they are relevant to the cultural plurality of the societies of which they are a part. This demands not only that members of indigenous peoples be incorporated as students, teachers, researchers, managers and officials, but also that their visions of the world, their accumulated knowledge, their modes of knowledge production, their learning modalities and languages be incorporated. ”, explained in a previous note for Río Negro, Daniel Matto, a researcher at the Conicet and director of the Unesco chair “Higher Education and Indigenous and Afrodescendant Peoples in Latin America” from the Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero. And there is more cloth to cut in that sense.
In this path of having a culturally diverse and open house of higher studies, the Superior Council of the UNCo accepted an invitation from the Mapuche Confederation of Neuquén to meet next month, in the Ruca of the original town. “It is very important from the symbolic point of view, but it is also important to retrace the path of the coloniality of knowledge”, confirmed Gentile.
We understand that interculturality is built, that it is not given. Therefore, it is an experience that you have to go through and in that sense, we are taking the first steps”.

University of Comahue: University assembly, to modernize the house of higher studies
Why is important the University Assembly? To begin with, it must be said that the statute of the National University of Comahue establishes it as one of its main co-government bodies, together with the rectory and the Superior Council.
But who best explains its importance is the rector Beatriz Gentile. The assembly has not been held since 2013.
“The highest body must be summoned to work on modifications and updates of what, with the passage of time, are regulations that have become outdated, such as the adequacy of the collective labor agreements of teachers and non-teachers, as well as the regulations regarding everything that to the student body, as well as rethinking the hierarchy of university centers and settlements that they grew a lot in this time and that today they have a different dynamic, where they are corseted within a figure that perhaps does not represent them and does not help them to continue growing,” he said.
The rector also explained the fundamentals of refounding the University Assembly. First, it is necessary to specify that this institution has as one of its main faculties the reform of the university statute. «In the history of our university, on occasions, the assembly was convened not so much to delve into the changes that were needed regarding the statute, but above all it was raised as a way of resolving conflicts between positions and antagonisms that might not be resolved within of the field of Better advice or within what was the dynamics of the university community itself. So, what we propose is to be able to deal with these outdated issues, outdated during these years, “concluded the rector.
