Mexican authorities have raised the alert level for the Popocatepetl volcano to one level below the red alert level, due to the emission of smoke, ash and molten rock from its crater, which poses dangers to aviation and remote villages below the volcano.

The volcano, located in central Mexico, is considered one of the most dangerous in the world, with regarding 25 million people living within a radius of 100 kilometers. The alert level was raised to “third yellow phase”, a day following two airports in Mexico City suspended operations due to ashfall.

Popocatepetl is located on the borders of the states of Morelos, Mexico and Puebla, whose capital was covered in ashes, an AFP correspondent said.

A yellow alert means “stay alert and prepare for a possible evacuation,” according to an alert system developed by Mexico’s National Center for Disaster Prevention.

The third activated yellow phase means “medium to high activity” and is announced when the volcano is exhibiting “explosions of increasing intensity, spewing glowing fragments.”
