Some actors started by playing in commercials, others by doing extras and appearances on television or in the cinema, and, for that, they all went through castings. And they missed it too.
Before experiencing success playing Katniss Everdeen in the “Hunger Games” saga, Jennifer Lawrence had a string of small roles: she appeared in the “Monk” and “Cold Case” series for one episode, and she might have star in “Gossip Girl”. She indeed auditioned to play Serena Van Der Woodsen… without success. It was finally Blake Lively who got the role.
Jake Gyllenhaal was not yet famous when he passed the casting of the “Lord of the Rings”, and he obviously did not please Peter Jackson, who bluntly said that he was “the worst actor he had seen “. Of course, he later proved the opposite. But it’s not just beginners who miss casting, confirmed actors also suffer failures.
A successful casting for ten failures
To pass a casting is to propose a vision of the character. Vision that does not necessarily correspond to what the director has in mind. George Clooney paid the price. For the audition of “Dracula”, by Francis Ford Coppola, the actor appeared tipsy in front of the director, because the script indicated that the vampire had a fondness for alcohol. But his interpretation did not really please Francis Ford Coppola, who preferred Gary Oldman to him.
Bradley Cooper had used a big voice, like Batman, for the casting of “Green Lantern”, without convincing the director Martin Campbell who described his performance as “bad sketch”. For her part, Scarlett Johansson, who tried her luck to play Fantine in “Les Miserables”, might not give the best of herself because of laryngitis on the day of the casting. It was Anne Hathaway who finally landed the role.
