Screens are ubiquitous in our society. The youngest in particular have never known a world without smartphones and other digital tablets. To fight once morest the sedentary lifestyle associated with these uses and encourage physical activity, one solution consists of combining the two: exergaming. Presentation.
Jogging, swimming or even a walk in the park… Whatever you suggest, your child or teenager refuses to move? Here’s an option that might work: exergaming or active gaming. It’s regarding playing video games on a tablet, console or computer that require you to use your muscles. Thus, for example, on the Nintendo Switch® console, it is possible to play tennis or even golf by mimicking the gestures of the discipline… while staying in your living room. A way to make sport more fun for young people in particular.
There are also many exergaming games, especially via applications. Specific devices such as sensory trays for dancing with games like Just Dance or boxing to the rhythm with Fitness Boxing 2.
Alternative au sport ?
But then, is it really effective? Can these games replace sport? If it is not a question of endorsing their exclusive use instead of physical activity off-screen, these exergames seem to be useful for supplementing insufficient physical activity on a daily basis. Faced with the growing sedentary lifestyle, especially among the youngest, these games are indeed a tool once morest overweight, obesity and all the associated pathologies. In any case, this is the opinion of the American College of Sports Medicine: “Numerous studies have shown that several types of exergams can cause moderate physical activity and have a real physiological impact”.
Without forgetting that the pleasure of the game and the possibility of practicing with several people improves well-being and sociability. And thanks to the portable aspect of smartphones, tablets and other digital devices, exergames are also portable. Wherever you are, it is now possible to practice. “This type of activity is healthy and attractive enough to help improve physical activity levels in all populations”, says the American College of Sports Medicine. So do not hesitate!
